Blocked internally, used anyway
Legal will not approve it, so officially nobody here uses AI.
// The diagnosis
The ban does not stop the usage. It moves it. People paste into a personal account on their own phone, where there is no log, no retention control and no way to know what left the building. So the strictest position often carries the largest unmeasured exposure, because a policy nobody can follow gets worked around rather than obeyed. Roughly two thirds of organisations name security and risk as the main barrier to scaling agents, and while that argument runs, the teams who comply fall behind the ones who do not.
// TRAIN
Safe use is taught inside every session rather than bolted on as a module at the end: what can go in, what cannot, and a named person approving anything before it is acted on. We work in the tools you already own and control, on your own documents. Nothing touches your systems without IT in the room. Legal and risk help design the programme instead of being shown the result afterwards.
// The outcome
A rule people can actually follow, so the usage comes back inside the building where you can see it.
// Before you call
Ask around informally, and without consequences, how many people used AI for work on a personal account this month. That number is your real exposure today, and it is the one your policy is not measuring.
Not this if you have a genuine legal prohibition rather than an unresolved policy. Then the answer is a lawyer, not me.
// The other calls I get
- 01Everyone agrees we should be doing this. Nobody has an afternoon to spare.
- 02Every time we want to build something, we have to go outside for it.
- 04We cannot take on more work without hiring more of the person we cannot find.
- 05Most of what we earn arrives through a platform we do not control and cannot integrate with.
- 06We are paying four suppliers for AI and I cannot tell the board which of them is working.
- 07We have been at this a year and I still cannot put a number next to any of it.
